“Camp Wool” Aug 15, 1862
My Dearest Wife
My letters must be short if not sweet, as we are in all the stir of Camp Life, but still moving a little.
Yesterday, we made out to get ordered into a Company, which we have every reason to think will be a “crack” Company, all sturdy fellows from Orange, Gardner, Westminster, and Northfield[.] Cap[t] Sawyer is the one to take command. The Co is full, and the Regiment will be very soon.
There is nothing particularly new since my last, only the hosts are pouring in. The 34th will be likely to leave today, and we are to have their tents, so we shall be “at home.” Have had Edwd. Peirce for a visitor, who has been here in W. with his mother. Called on her at Hobb’s day before yesterday, and the H’s will also be very happy to see Ms Jerome P when she comes here, but you will go to Walker’s as I before mentioned.
We are now in Company and shall have regular drills, so I can’t say but a word, at a time. we are all crowded in one tent (the Capts).
Foster will be here I expect every day. Eddy Haynes is appointed Quartermaster Sergeant in the Regular Army, so he says.
Now to finish, tell them the “boys” are in excellent spirits, and working in to Camp life finely, and are longing to be in Regimental order.
Must close, as we are in a jam. So remember me to all. Write often. Direct to Camp Woll [sic: Wool], Capt Sawyer’s Co.
As ever
Yours Always
Jerome P
Tell the folks at B. to write and not wait for me, when we are in our own Mess and T[h]en I can be more constant.
