Text

My dear little Lulu!
Have just been talking to Mama and sent her a kiss and then I thought I had such a cunning little envelope, I would send a letter to yourself.
Aunt Abbie sent your letter in red and blue pencil so I take it you go for the “Red, White and Blue”. That is right. They are the colors Papa sees except when he looks up into the sky. Isn’t it beautiful at sunset! and the stars begin to come out. Papa too sees the same beautiful sky, stars and moon that little Lulu does and he thinks of his daughter oh so often and hopes sometime to come home after his long walks are over with.
Papa is resting now and you must do so too and not run too fast or get too tired, but keep well so I can walk with you one of these days. Do you think you could know me? I think you would for I don’t change much though the sun has “tanned” me some.
Have been sitting for some time on the ground and am tired so must bid you “Good By[e].”
Hope you will get a beautiful picture and story book one of the[se] days that I have sent you. Some beautiful pictures.
Be a good girl and remember and love Papa as though he was with you always.
Good by[e] with a kiss from
Papa

I didn’t mean to blot this.
TRANSCRIBER’S NOTE

This letter does not indicate where Jerome was located when he wrote the letter or the date he wrote it. However, a small white envelope addressed “Miss Lulu S. Peirce, Present” (which obviously contained this letter, as Jerome mentioned in the text) was included in the envelope that contained Letter Number 149. Letter Number 149 was written when Jerome was in Covington, Kentucky, and it is dated August 15, 1863. Therefore, this location and date can be assigned to this letter to Lulu.
